ALBANY: Goshen students participate in Angelo del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute

Goshen High School students participated in the Angelo del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute sponsored by The New York State Assembly/Senate Puerto-Rican/Hispanic Task Force and SOMOS, Inc.
Seniors Evelyn Aguilar Delgado Mariana Jimenes Luna and junior Alexa Rosario participated in several training sessions run by the Hudson Valley Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network at local colleges where they learned about leadership and the legislative process in New York State. They also engaged in independent research and practiced debating bills relevant to the Hispanic/Latino community that were recently acted upon in the New York State Assembly.
Upon completion of the training, Alexa Rosario was selected as one of the 50 Hudson Valley Region student-delegates. She represented 100th Assembly District member Paula Elaine Kay at a mock session of the New York State Assembly the weekend of March 8-10 in Albany.
More than 200 student-delegates from across New York State attended. Participants engaged in themed team-building workshops at SUNY Albany, the mock assembly session at the Assembly chamber, as well as a student recognition dinner where more than $40,000 in scholarships were awarded to senior student-delegates.
“I am proud to be able to bring this wonderfully empowering experience to our district’s Hispanic/Latino community,” said Katharine González, TESOL teacher at Goshen High School and PR/HYLI district liaison.
