Goshen —Thursday, April 17 is a date that scouts in Venturing Crew 65 of Goshen will long remember, since it was the night of their first Court of Honor. Venturing Crew 65 was established three years ago, and the Venturers have been working hard to meet requirements to earn awards. The highest honors went to Benjamin Helt, Thomas Raco, and Melissa Wiegand, who were the recipients of the Bronze Award, the first level towards earning the Venturing Silver Award and then onto the highest award, the Venturing Gold Award. Both Ben and Thomas received the Outdoor Bronze Award and Melissa received the Sports Bronze Award. To earn the Outdoor Award, Ben and Thomas completed at least four core requirements and two electives, while for the Sports Award, Melissa had to complete nine of 12 requirements, like knowing first aid for injuries or illnesses that could occur while playing sports. Melissa is president of Venturing Crew 65 and Thomas is vice-president. On March 15, at the Hudson Valley Council Boy Scouts of America Recognition Dinner, Ben and Melissa each received another top award, the Venturing Leadership Award. “Building citizenship and leadership are the goals of Venture Crew,” said Advisor Donna Helt, explaining that the young people run the meetings themselves and decide what they want to do. “They even set their own rules of conduct, which they all abide by. They learn skills that they can take with them into their adult lives,” she said. Bob Helt is Associate Crew Advisor. “We started this group in 2004 with five members,” said Charter Organization Representative Ken Skyer, “We now have 23.” If you are age 14 to 20, male or female, and are interested in learning more about Venturing, contact: Donna Helt, kismifdonna@yahoo.com or call her at 427-5437.
