Goshen officers commended for saving resident
Goshen. If it weren’t for their swift actions, Tom Caruso may have died.
On the morning of Nov. 6, Goshen Village Police officers Evan Metakes and Jeremy Harter were recognized at the City of Middletown Police Department for life-saving actions on April 1, 2024.
Goshen Village Police Chief Ryan Rich recently relayed the details of their actions. On April 1, Tom Caruso of 11 Fletcher Street in the village of Goshen suffered from a “widow maker” type heart attack, which reportedly has a 12% survival rate. Metakes and Harter were among the first responders to arrive. They immediately began CPR, attached the department AED, and delivered a shock. They continued CPR with the assistance of state police and members of the Middletown PD until the Goshen volunteer ambulance arrived and transported Caruso to Garnet Health Medical Center.
Rich noted that the attending doctors at Garnet said the effort of all those involved resulted in Caruso’s survival. Caruso is the father of City of Middletown police officer Jon Reyes.
“The officers’ composure and swift actions prevented the loss of life,” Rich added.
Caruso has since fully recovered.
