Orange-Ulster BOCES hosts spelling bee on March 9
Via online-testing platform. Seventh and eighth grade students attending public schools in Orange County, including those in Chester, Goshen and Monroe-Woodbury participate in the 64th annual spelling bee.
The annual Orange-Ulster BOCES Spelling Bee, co-sponsored by the Times Herald-Record, the Orange County School Boards Association, the Community Foundation of Orange and Orange-Ulster BOCES will be held on Tuesday, March 9.
The event is organized by the Orange-Ulster BOCES School Library System.
“We are happy to share that the Bee recognizes the uncertainty surrounding this school year and has developed a way for us to continue offering the spelling bee program to your students in any learning environment by using an online-testing platform,” said Kimberly Hooper, Coordinator of School Library Services at Orange-Ulster BOCES.
“The Bee helps students with spelling, vocabulary, and language usage. These skills will help them all their lives,” Hooper added. “It’s exciting to have a local student represent the area at the national Bee in June. We are proud to hold the 64th Annual Orange-Ulster BOCES Spelling Bee and we look forward to providing this wonderful opportunity to our students.”
The first-place winner of the Orange County Bee will have the opportunity to compete at the national level at the Scripps National Spelling Bee to be held in the Washington, D.C. area from June 1 through June 3. Their goal is to host a live event so the spellers can enjoy all the wonder of Bee Week. They also realize the importance of planning for a possible virtual event if that is the only safe way to host.
The seventh and eighth grade students competing this year will have won their local spelling contests in the following schools:
Chester Academy Middle School
Cornwall Central Middle School
C. J. Hooker Middle School (Goshen)
Monroe-Woodbury Middle School
Port Jervis Middle School
Valley Central Middle School
Washingtonville Middle School
