New school administrator in Goshen

— On Jan. 7, Dr. Frank Sheboy began his first day as assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction, personnel and technology at the Goshen Central School District. Sheboy, a graduate of the Goshen High School Class of 1985, says his new position, “feels like being home.”

“I had wonderful teachers and experiences while a student at Goshen, and I’m excited about the opportunity to contribute to the district,” he said.

The position was previously occupied by Jane Unhjem, a beloved longtime administrator whose death in a plane crash last August shocked and saddened the community.

Sheboy comes to Goshen from the Cornwall Central School District, where was high school principal for the past six years. He had previously served as the school’s assistant principal for four years. He began his career as a social studies teacher at the Washingtonville Central School District, a position he held for 12 years.

“I love to teach and even as an administrator, still consider myself a teacher,” he said.

But Sheboy did not originally consider education as a career. In fact, when he first began contemplating his future while a student at the Goshen High School, the thought of becoming an educator never crossed his mind.

“My plan was to go to business school, study law and become a corporate attorney,” he admitted.

But life had different plans for Sheboy. After experiencing a significant life change as an undergraduate at SUNY Albany, Sheboy discovered his true calling — working with and supporting children. He decided to switch gears and become an educator, and after 23 years in the field, has returned home to Goshen, his alma mater.

“I believe that my skills and talents are a great fit for the district,” he said. “I always envisioned myself working here.”

But becoming an administrator wasn’t a cut-and-dry decision for Sheboy, either. During his eighth or ninth year at Washingtonville, the superintendent urged him to become an administrator, something he had never considered before.

“At the time, he saw something in me that I didn’t yet see in myself,” said Sheboy.

As the years went on, Sheboy was continually tapped for his expertise and asked to lead certain initiatives as a veteran teacher. It was then that he began to realize his passion for educational leadership and decided to pursue the necessary credentials to further his career as an administrator.

“I love working with staff to foster ideas that will enhance our children’s educational experience, and ultimately do what’s best for our kids,” he said. “I look forward to working with the superintendent, Board of Education and the faculty and staff to bring the best educational program possible to the Goshen Central School District. After all, when the pencil hits the paper, that’s where the magic happens.”
