Sacred Heart Church in Monroe held a eucharistic procession on Oct. 9 around the Monroe Ponds, concluding at the Sacred Heart Chapel Still Road.
About 150 people from Harriman, Monroe, Central Valley, Highland Mills, Chester and Vernon N.J., took part, according to participant Eileen Collopy of Central Valley, adding she hoped the procession would “promote the power of prayer that our country once had, and so desperately needs.”
Eucharistic processions first became a popular practice in church life during the celebration of Corpus Christi, traditionally celebrated on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday. Though directly connected to the liturgical feast of Corpus Christi, eucharistic processions may take place at other appropriate times and places under the authority of the bishop and following liturgical norms, according to faithmag.org.
On its Facebook page, church thanked the Monroe Police Department for its assistance and noted the church was looking forward to future processions.
