Twenty-four young players from Matchpoint Tennis in Goshen took over the court in Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, NY, before the US Open evening match on Aug. 29 for a youth tennis demonstration. The players rallied for about seven minutes using youth-size rackets, pop-up nets, and red balls designed for juniors as part of the US Open Net Generation Experience, which aims to get more kids into tennis.
Albert Ji, 9, of Monroe, and Chase DeSilva, 10, of Campbell Hall were interviewed and broadcast on the big screen while their peers hit. Ji’s favorite player is world number-one Iga Swiatek, while DeSilva’s is “Coach Maeve” Cassidy, of Monroe, who coaches at Matchpoint and plays at Fairfield University.
The on-court demo was the culmination of an afternoon spent watching matches and getting autographs, tickets courtesy of the US Open.
“Hitting on the same court as our idols is an unforgettable experience that we are very grateful for,” said Ari Rogers, president of Matchpoint Tennis.
