Community comes together to end hunger
GOSHEN — The Goshen School District's Youth Ending Hunger Club held its first lasagna night on Jan. 11, when the whole community came together to help end hunger.
Many businesses and individuals donated trays of lasagna, salad, bread, water bottles, paper products, and centerpieces, as well as cookies and brownies for dessert. Parents and other adult club members, along with high-school and middle-school student members, helped with the preparation, serving, and clean-up.
Community members, families and neighbors, came out to enjoy a lasagna dinner, served with community spirit, philanthropy, and old-fashioned fun. Due to the generosity of the donors, the club was able to generate a substantial amount, to be used to purchase supermarket gift certificates for the families it serves. A number of trays of lasagna were left over. These were frozen and then distributed to local families in need, as well as to the Guild of St. Margaret's Soup Kitchen in Middletown.
The community advisor, Sue-Anne Dropkin, organized the event with the help of co-presidents John Navilio and Shawn Gill, vice president Andrew Lupinski, member Jessica McDowell, along with several other volunteers from the high school and middle school. Girl Scout Brownie Troop 598 provided and arranged the floral centerpieces, as part of their Philanthropy Badge. High-school students provided musical entertainment, and all those present had a good time for a good cause.
Club founder Regina Botens thanked everyone for their participation and told the attendees: “On a cold, foggy, rainy night, you parents and students came out to make a stand on ending hunger in the world. The advisors — Ms. Scoville, Mrs. Dropkin, Mrs. Matalucci and I — feel that at this time of recession, foreclosures, and poverty, you families are shining stars in a dark night. You represent hope for a better world.”
