Goshen students win Sojourner Truth Award

GOSHEN - Sixteen students from the C.J. Hooker Middle School in Goshen were awarded the Sojourner Truth Award, sponsored by Orange County Community College. The award recognizes the achievements of students in grades 6 to 12 and encourages higher education for students from groups that are traditionally under-represented in the college population. Award recipients were recognized in one of the following areas: language arts, mathematics, science, performing and media arts, athletics, citizenship, and perseverance/effort. The award winners are eighth-grade students Justin Brantley, mathematics; Maegan Cadet, language arts; Emily Fonseca, language arts; Anna Goyzueta, citizenship; Victoria Hale, citizenship; Nancy Hernandez, citizenship; Jennifer Kang, language arts; Emilie Murphy, citizenship; Jacqueline Ortiz, language arts; Noe Ramirez, citizenship; Robert Roehrich, citizenship; Alexandra Santiago, perseverance/effort; Josh Shih, mathematics; Michaela Torres, perseverance/effort; Erin VanDunk, citizenship; and Anthony Zelenka, citizenship. An awards ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 9, at the Orange County Community College. The Sojourner Truth Award is named after the former slave who embodied strength, courage, and commitment and who was dedicated to human and civil rights. This is Orange County Community College’s 18th annual recognition program.
