Angelo R. Perez
Angelo R. Perez of Middletown, N.Y., died on Saturday, June 4, 2016, at Kindred Hospital in Wayne, N.J., with his loving wife, Nelly, at his bedside. He was 77.
Son of the late Angel and Petra Perez, he was born in March 1939 in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having enlisted at age 17 with the strong desire to serve his country. He was stationed overseas in Germany and during that time he began to sing in the Army choir. That decision to join the choir fueled a passion that would later lead to Angelo performing at the world-famous Carnegie Hall.
Following his honorable discharge in 1960 he returned home to the United States. In 1967 he was hired as an engineer for Fox Television located in Manhattan, where he would work for the next 34 years.
He married Enelida “Nelly” Cruz on Sept. 16, 1967. In 1972 Angelo and Nelly relocated to Monroe, N.Y., and in 1984 they moved to Middletown.
During his time at Fox Angelo would go on to become an on-air radio personality for WGNY FM. He also obtained his real estate and life insurance licenses. After retiring from FOX, he would become the Morning show host for the only all-Spanish Hudson Valley Radio station at the time, Cumulus Radio’s El Ritmo- 1340-1390 a.m. After his time at El Ritmo, he would become a van driver for Orange County, where his duties included driving the less fortunate to Doctors appointments and job interviews.
He was devoted to his family and friends and enjoyed traveling with them and seeing them often.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Nelly Perez, at home; sisters, Carmen Firpi and Evelyn Collogero; brother, Raphael Perez, and his wife, Elsie; sons, Michael A. Perez and wife, Lisa, of Chester, N.Y., Richard A. Perez and wife, Omy, of Westbrookville, N.Y., and Eric J. Perez and wife, Sarah, of Coral Springs, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Madison, Hunter, Elijah, and Elizabeth Perez, Ricky and Romin Perez, and David, Brittany, Lauren and Victoria Peterson; nieces and nephews Carol Perez, Lorraine Perez-Caceres, Petra Iris, and Mildred and Kiv Firpi; and 6 great-nieces and 8 great-nephews
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, at Christian Faith Fellowship, 510 M&M Road, Middletown, NY 10940. A Christian Burial Military Honors will follow the service at Orange County Veterans Cemetery.
