Hudson Valley Plein Air on display in Rock Tavern
Rock Tavern. See what 27 artists were up to in the great outdoors this fall.
Works from the Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival will be on display in December and January at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Rock Tavern (UUCRT).
Twenty-seven artists painted en plein air from Oct. 8-12 around the Hudson Valley and are displaying the paintings at Orange Hall Gallery on SUNY Orange’s Middletown campus at the corner of Wawayanda and Grandview Avenues in Middletown. The paintings are being shown until Nov. 25.
After Nov. 25, the plein exhibit will be on the move. A selection of those works will be displayed in the sanctuary of the UUCRT on Fridays evenings and Saturday and Sunday afternoons during December and January. The congregation is located at 9 Vance Road, Rock Tavern.
Plein air painting, is the act of painting outdoors. This method contrasts with studio painting or academic rules that might create a predetermined look. Artists have long painted outdoors, but in the mid-19th century, working in natural light became particularly important to the Barbizon school, Hudson River School and Impressionists.
The Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival is the brainchild of the Wallkill River School of Art, a non-profit art gallery and art school serving the Hudson Valley for 15 years.
