John J. Flynn, former Chester resident, dies at 75

John J. Flynn of Pine Bush, a former longtime Chester resident, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, at his home after a long battle with heart disease and leukemia. He was 75.

Son of the late Michael and Ellen Flynn, he was born in Harlem on Dec. 30, 1936.

He was a maintenance supervisor for the Archdiocese of New York for more then 46 years. He was dedicated to the church and enjoyed working within the Roman Catholic Community.

He married his first wife, Jean, in the Bronx. Jean predeceased him in 1974. He then married his second wife, Diane McGrath McGowan, in 1978.

Survivors include his wife, Diane, at home; children, Teresa Flynn, Jean Marie Scala and her husband, Steven, Thomas McGowan, Michael Flynn, Joseph McGowan and his wife, Elizabeth Obremski McGowan, and John Flynn Jr., and his wife, Karin Blaut Flynn; seven grandchildren, Kristina Jean Wilkens, Christian Michael Archibald, John Joseph McGowan, Joseph Francis McGowan, Nicholas Vincenzo Scala, Ryan Patrick Flynn, and Kenzie Nicole Flynn; two sisters, Marie Maloney and Eileen Morgan of New Jersey; one brother, Terrence Flynn of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by his sisters Rita Rogan and Geraldine O’Neill; and brothers Michael, Timothy, Sonny and Daniel Flynn.

Visitation was held Oct. 6 at Flynn Funeral and Cremation Memorial Centers, Monroe. A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 6 at St. Columba Roman Catholic Church, Chester. The Rev. John Bonnici officiated. Entombment took place at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Mother Queen of Peace Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association (www.heart.org) P.O.
