GOSHEN — Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler is forming regional Community Advisory Boards "to open the lines of communication between my office and all segments of our communities, right down to the individual citizen."

He announced the formation of seven regional Community Advisory Boards, smaller geographic divisions of the countywide Community Advisory Board that Hoovler established last fall. When completed, the regional boards will represent a cross-section of community officials and groups, including municipal boards, mayors, town supervisors, police departments, school districts, community anti-drug coalitions, and others.

At present, one of the regional boards, Region 2, which covers the City of Middletown and the Towns of Wallkill and Wawayanda, has sufficient representation to begin discussing crime in its area. The Region 2 board includes:

Barbara Alvarez, President, Wallkill Police Community Council

Dan Depew, Town Supervisor, Town of Wallkill

Chief Robert Hertman, Town of Wallkill Police Department

Dr. Paul Johnson, Alderman, City of Middletown

Sgt. Essam Khalil, Community Affairs Officer, Middletown Police Department

Peg Kimple, Coordinator, Middletown Cares Coalition

Dr. Hans Sebald, Dean of Students, Middletown High School

Sgt. Al Shamah, New York State Police

“I have long been an advocate of community prosecution,” said Hoovler. "We believe that by opening a dialogue with our communities, we will be better able to determine what problems we have with crime, and will be better able to come up with creative solutions to those problems.”

Anyone interested in joining a board may contact Executive Assistant District Attorney Robert Conflitti, Chief of the Special Projects and Community Affairs Bureau, or Assistant District Attorney Darlene De Jesus, Community Affairs Coordinator, at 615-3640.
