UPDATE: Lockdown lifted at Chester Academy
CHESTER — The Chester Academy was on lockdown Tuesday afternoon with a heavy police presence on campus.
At 4:20 p.m., New York State Trooper Steven Nevel said that the lockdown was being lifted and that students were beginning to be dismissed.
The school went into lockdown after a student reported seeing a man with a gun in the school.
"It appears to be unfounded, but we're following protocol, sweeping every room," Nevel said earlier on Tuesday.
"No students are injured at this time. The school is still under lockdown until we complete our search," Neville said. "We’ve already checked the elementary school. Right now were still going through the high school at this time."
"Law enforcement has communicated with district officials that their investigation found that there was never any threat to Chester Academy," says a message posted at about 2:30 p.m. on the website of the Goshen school district, which, along with other local schools, were on lockout during the incident. "The district activated its safety procedures as a precautionary measure. Thank you for your cooperation."
Just before 2 p.m., the Chester school district posted the following message: "At approximately 1:20 p.m. today a 911 call was made. It is currently under investigation. Chester Academy is under a lockdown and Chester Elementary School is under a lockout. Police are on location. Dismissal will be delayed."
The Town of Chester Police posted the following shortly afterward: "Town of Chester officers are currently operating at the Chester Academy. A single student reported a man with a gun in the school. There are no reports of shots fired and only one person who reports seeing the man with the gun. Video reviews were conducted with no confirmation of the report. Teams are currently searching the school. Updates will follow. No injuries or casualties."
Other schools in the area were on lockout during the incident.
A phone alert sent to the parents of students in the Washingtonville school district at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday read, "As a precautionary measure, the District has implemented a lockout due to a situation at the Chester Academy. More information will follow."
Washingtonville has since ended its lockout.
The Goshen Central School district also reports in a post that it is also on lockout this afternoon: "There was no threat made to any of our schools and we do not believe that our students are in any danger; however, the decision to enact the lockout is to provide an abundance of caution and ensure the safety of our students and employees."
School lockouts are intended to protect students from danger or threats located outside the building. A lockdown is used to protect students from danger inside their school.
